In July 2015, 2Faced Dance Company were awarded funding from Arts Council England and the British Council to develop work with female choreographers in India, as part of their Re:Imagine India fund.
During Autumn 2015 and early Spring 2016, the company embarked on a period of research across three locations in India; Mumbai, Bangalore and Kerala, to determine the possibility of an international exchange programme for female choreographers in 2017. As a result of those and further partnerships being made, The BENCH India was launched.
During January and February 2017, the company returned to India to present our latest touring work, RUN, and to work with partner organisations on the delivery of The BENCH in India. During our time in the country we hosted an industry conference as part of the Attakkalari Biennale in Bangalore. At this conference, 5 selected female choreographers pitched for a commission to bring their work to the UK to tour to various venues in Autumn 2017.
Hemabharathy Palani & Ronita Mookerji were selected and their work will tour to various UK venues alongside one of the UK BENCH Fellows. More news to be announced in early May 2017.
The following short film documents the company’s time in India earlier this year:
