Moves 2 Succeed

Moves to Succeed has recently moved into the second year of its pilot project. 2Faced Dance In partnership with Herefordshire Council and Nicola's School of Dance were successful in obtaining a grant from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation to run a dance project in four primary schools in 2010. The aim of 'Phase 1' was to enable children with challenging behaviour to develop coping strategies for the classroom through dance. Trinity Primary School reported on the project. "I think MTS has played a part in developing some coping strategies. It's allowed them to focus more, being able to bring their focus onto a task. In terms of their overall motivation, it's made them more interested in school". In some of the school's attendance shot up from the late 65% to 96%, a huge increase and a clear indicator on the effect of the project. As well as the attendance increase their was a noticeable improvement in behaviour and self esteem from 83% of the children. One child commented "I was focused, and I was pretending there was no-one watching. I wasn't nervous, just happy". Now in its second year Moves to Succeed is piloting 'Phase 2'. The aim of Phase 2 is develop dance moves, activities and strategies with children, teaching staff and parents that can be used in all school environments such as in assembly, the playground, the classroom or at dinner time for behaviour management, increased focus, increased self esteem and team work. The outcome of 'Phase 2' will be improved attendance, understanding, confidence and behaviour throughout school. We will report back on the success of the project once it has been completed.
